And Exhale

I'm feeling good about the week now, and I think it's because it's almost over. This happens almost every Thursday, even if I'm not as frantically busy as I was this week.

Do you remember Thursdays in college? After your freshman year, it was rare to have morning classes on Friday (or even classes at all on Friday), and so Thursday was this automatic jump-start for the weekend. Lots of bars had college nights on Thursday, and a lot of those places let in everyone 18 and over, so right from the start you were invited to make every weekend a three-day weekend.

That stuck with me through most of college. My senior year, the only thing I had on Friday was holding a staff meeting at noon for the college paper, and most of the students (reporters, editors, everyone) would show up nursing a hangover. You should up, you have a half hour meeting, the editors have a planning meeting, then everyone resumes their drinking or weekend slacking.

Grad school was more of the same. I don't think I ever had class on Friday, and I did work late night agate at the paper on Thursday night, but that still just encouraged me to stay up late and sleep in and do jack on Fridays.

Now that I have a job, not a lot has changed. Fridays we have a story meeting at 10, and we can wear jeans, so it feels like it should be a weekend day. Thursday night I have this sense of freedom--all my stories are done, we've gone to press, and I can sleep in a bit in the morning, don't have to dress up and can relax through most of the day.

(Recently, special publications have made Fridays busy, but I think we're done for at least a little bit. I think. Maybe. I hope I didn't just jinx us.)

Tonight is the vice presidential debate. I'm hoping that there will be some intelligent back and forth, but the gossip/bitch in me wants a total train wreck. I want something I can talk about for years to come. Plus, I admit that I love hearing gossipy-type stuff, so I want to hear lots of dishy excuses and complaints and jokes afterward. I think that if my legitimate journalism career ever blows up, I'd be rather content at a snarky blog or whatever that supermarket rag is that talks about the bat boy and aliens. I'll pass on the celebrities and semi-truth-and-rumor mags; give me the insane bullshit.
